GOVERNMENT

County Government 

Keith County Government 
Keith County is 1,110 square miles and is governed by five county commissioners, elected by popular vote for four-year terms.  This organization assists with planning, grant administration and program administration as well as a variety of other tasks related to Keith County. 

Municipal Government 

Ogallala Government 
Ogallala has a city manager form of government. There is a five-member elected city council including a presiding mayor. The council members are elected for a term of four years. The position of mayor is an elected two-year term of office from among the seated council members. The city manager is appointed and has an annual contract. Council meetings are held each month.

The Villages of Brule and Paxton each have representative village boards. 


Law Enforcement 

Keith County Sheriffs Department 
The department serves the people of Keith County by providing updates on area fugitives, unsolved Keith County crimes, department programs, special events and much more.

Ogallala Police Department 
The department serves the people of the Ogallala by providing law enforcement service. The department works toward creating a high quality of life in the community by actively working with citizens, elected and appointed officials and other government agencies to reduce crime and the fear of crime and to protect the lives and property of citizens from criminal act or traffic mishap.

Nebraska State Patrol
Serving Nebraska since 1937, the Nebraska State Patrol (NSP) is committed to professional public service reflecting recognition of the inherent value of each individual in our society. Our officers strive to earn and maintain trust, respect, and confidence by exemplifying the belief that the freedoms, rights, and dignity of all citizens must be protected and preserved. To this end we pledge ourselves to the highest standards of morality, fairness, honesty, dedication, professionalism and courage.

Nebraska Game & Parks
Nebraska Game and Parks cares for our state's fish, wildlife and outdoor recreation resources.

Fire Protection 

Keystone-Lemoyne Fire and Rescue 
Keystone-Lemoyne Fire and Rescue serves the citizens of Keith County near Lake McConaughy including the communities of Lemoyne and Keystone by responding to emergencies of fire, medical & technical rescues.

Ogallala Volunteer Fire Department 
Ogallala has a 34-member volunteer fire department. The department covers approximately 458 square miles of varied terrain in Keith County which includes communities such as Lemoyne, Keystone, and Roscoe. The department is also apart of the 
Southwest Mutual Aid District which provides aid to surrounding fire departments such as Hershey, Oshkosh, and Imperial. 

​Paxton Volunteer Fire Department 
The Paxton Volunteer Fire Department serves the citizens of northeastern Perkins County and Eastern Keith County including the village of Paxton by responding to emergencies.

Planning and Zoning 

Keith County Planning and Zoning 
The Keith County Planning Commission is a nine-member board appointed by the Keith County Board of Commissioners. The duties of the planning, zoning and building inspection office include building inspection from site plan, footing, framing, and dry wall inspection to the final certificate of occupancy. Other duties include, nuisance control, and flood plain management.

A Comprehensive Plan, Zoning Ordinance and Subdivision Regulations were approved in 2004 with modifications since.

Streets

Keith County Highway Department 
Keith County has 70 miles of paved roads, 640 miles of gravel roads as well as over 90 miles of minimum maintenance roads that are the responsibility of the Keith County Highway Development. 

State Government 

Nebraska State Government 
Nebraska's Unicameral, or single-house legislature, is unique among state legislatures. It meets every year, alternating 90- and 60-day sessions. The budget is passed on a two-year basis during the long session.
